This is when Union Cavalry Commander John Buford made the order to dismount his cavalrymen and harass the Confederate advance from the safety of the Herr, McPherson, and Seminary ridges west of Gettysburg in order to buy time for the rest of the Army of the Potomac to arrive and dig in.
