The idea for this photo came from a comic book called The Reivers. But the writer said it was based on a real event where a german sentry opened the gates for an SAS troop that was heading towards him from an exploding airfield behind. He even saluted them as they went past.

And with armament like that on board, he should be grateful they're concentrating on what's behind them.
