Several hundred people today attended a ceremony on the fantail of the Battleship Missouri Memorial commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the end of World War II.

“Mighty Mo” secured its place in history as the site of Japan’s unconditional surrender to the Allied Forces on Sept. 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay.
The 887-foot USS Missouri, commissioned in 1944, was part of the force that provided firepower in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
The Battleship Missouri Memorial opened on Jan. 29, 1999, at Pier Foxtrot 5 on Ford Island.

I Believe Sept. 1st 1939 was the German invasion of Poland

Unfortunately -- due to the news media's all encompassing coverage of the political conventions and the hurricanes, I did not notice any of the major networks taking a few minutes to note these occasions -- both the start of WW2 and the end of the Pacific War!

Perhaps if the veterans of WWII rioted like a bunch of hooligans at the conventions these historic dates would get more press:rolleyes:. It's quite amazing what is deemed news worthy these days.:(
