Finally most of you voted for the Charkkhari elephant. So I'm going for this state for the next Durbar elephant. I also found a photo of the Charkkhari Camel Riders that will go very well with the group.

The Elephant of Charkkhari

maharaja.jpg
A detail of the howda's front and Maharaja. Check the exquiste embroidery on his shoulder. And the curvy front of the howda.

cara.jpg
The elephant's face. One of the main reasons to choose the elephant. I found a wonderful (and fully helpful) drawing made by Raven Hill, who descrbes the pattern and colors. Exquisite work. It's slightly different that the design on the face at the Main Procession; that is mainly because he probably draw it during a visit to their camp and not during the parade.
The leopard looks black on the photo because yellow photographed dark (as well as the red color). But it was actually painted like a real leopard :). If you look carefully at the photo you will notice the spots, a bit darker than the body of the animal.

guards.jpg
The escort guards, so beautiful. I particularly like in this photo how clearly you can see their shoes in detail.

Chark.jpg
Another elephant shot. Also, more detail of the guards.

The Charkkhari Camel Riders

Camels of Charkhari.jpg

This is what the press said about them:

9 - Charkhari

1) 7 Camel riders

Civil & Military Gazette 13/01:
with drum

A Motley Army:
Charkhari sent men in scarlet on camels

Ana

And the last release for September: The Nabha Dogs and Hawks

Nabha dogs.jpg

9) Hawks and dogs

Civil & Military Gazette 13/01:
2 Hawks. 6 Greyhounds with yellow plush clothes.

Madras Times 08/01:
The caparisoned horses, hounds and hawks of the venerable chief of Nabha were a striking feature

Pioneer Mail 16/01 / The Coronation Durbar:
From this State also, it may be incidentally remarked, came falconers with hawks, a number of greyhounds following.

Wheeler:
...and falconers with hawks and greyhounds.

All sets make a nice plan, right? :)

The elephant will be quite the spectacle !!!! I also like the hawks and dogs, I am sure they will be charming.

Hello,

An update of my research. I was worried that I didn't have enough detail of the maharaja of Charkkhari. And then, reviewing all my mages one more time, I found a digital copy that I bought from the BL that features him pretty well.

char2.jpg
Great shot of the Maharaja Sir Malkhan Singh, the parasol, the front panel of the howda and the mahout.

Watching this photo for quite some time I found out that there's a ladder hanging from the right side of the elephant. The white rope is holding it from both ends but, as the ladder is quite dark in the photo, it can hardly be seen. I don't have pictures of the elephant from the right so I would have never known. I went to the one of the films that was taken from the right and yes, the ladder is there :)

Good detective work Anna. I looked at the image for ages before I could make it out - but if you hadn't told us where and what to look for - I wouldn't have noticed this detail at all. jb

This is the joy in researching. To discover a new feature that has been there all the time gets it more and more exciting. Many hours looking at photos do that :) :)

First guard from the group. I chose him because of his jacket. LOVELY! Such bright embroidery, so fancy. There were at least 3 of them in the group.

leftsall1.jpg

The left side of the elephant. The small embroidered blanket can't be seen in full. It is twisted to the right.

detalle 1.jpg

I know that the left image is not very clear, but you can see there (with effort and good will :)) that the blanket on this side is longer and covers a part of the staircase.

faces.jpg

The usual head I use to make my elephants had to be modifed to give space to the exquisite and intricate design painted on the face

Have a great weekend you all

Hello,

I'm in Chicago with the new sets. I couldn't bring all the sets I had planned. A couple were left on my working table unfinished, the others went into molding just when I left.

Set 450 - Elephant of Charkkhari, Delhi Durbar, 1903

Set 451 - Escort Guards from Charkkhari, group left, Delhi Durbar, 1903

Set 453, musicians and servants from Charkkhari, was left unfinished on my table. I'll finish it as soon as I come back and take pictures as soon as it is ready.

If you are attending the Chicago show, at the Hyatt Regency Schaumburg, I'm in room 5209, in case you want to take a look at the new elephant :)
