A television series set in Singapore during the mid-1960s, a tumultuous time in the island's history. The country is at a crossroads as the nation is about to break away from Malaysia and gain independence. The British colonial rulers are gradually pulling out of the country, while racial and political tensions are running high and the ensuing riots are threatening national security. Communist insurgency movements are active in neighbouring countries and trying to push into Singapore.

Acting not the best, but something different. Never aired in the U.S. [to my knowledge anyway] except on AcornTV.

This was shown in Australia a couple of years back and I thought it was quite a good series that showed the troubles that went on in the island state following WW2 and the formation of the modern country of Singapore.

Maybe some of the members of this forum who live there may comment on it too.

On another point, Serangoon Road a great range of restaurants, especially in Little India :)

Exactly. I was not familiar with the history, so following each of the five episodes I've [10 total] watched so far I
had to google quite a bit. Learned something. CIA, MI-6 and etc.all in there fighting for space.

John (Obee) is absolutely right. Serangoon Road in Singapore is very much associated with "Little India" and fine Indian cuisine. It is also home to many Indian business and commercial interests. "Little India" is one of Singapore’s most vibrant and colourful districts.

Along Serangoon Road and neighbouring streets, there is a mix of Indian and Chinese temples, Muslim mosques and Christian churches. There is a wide choice of food including South Indian (various curry dishes including fish head curry), North Indian (naan, tandoori, vindaloo etc) and local favourites like murtabak, roti prata (round pancakes) and the teh tarik (pulled tea in Malay). Contrary to popular belief, "Little India" is not an Indian enclave. There are a multitude of cross-cultural interests that are reflective of a multi-racial and multi-religious country that Singapore is.

The 10 part detective TV series called “Serangoon Road” co-produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corp. and HBO Asia, the Singapore-based affiliate of U.S. TV network HBO probably selected Serangoon Road for its unique South East Asian historical backdrop. It is interesting that a large part of the movie was filmed on the Indonesian island of Batam, a short ferry ride from Singapore.

As far as I know, there is no special relationship between Serangoon Road and the turbulent years of the 1960's when Singapore stood alone, fighting for its survival. Many predicted that Singapore would not survive as an independent sovereign country.

Raymond.
