I was watching Laurence Olivier's Hamlet the other night and wondered, has any toy soldier manufacturer ever brought out a range of characters from Shakespeare plays (other than Julius Caesar)? I'm thinking of Hamlet, Ophelia, Macbeth, Lear and his daughters, etc. Seems like something London Gothic or Tradition might do.

I don't know about any lines by current manufacturers but there is a photo on page 150 of John Garratt's book Model Soldiers: An Illustrated History (NYGS; 1972) of characters from Richard III by Frederick Ping. The book's text mentions series he did based on other theatrical works including pieces for Peter Cushing from The Mikado. The color photo of the Richard III pieces will make anyone want to do some conversions - they are really beautiful.

Interesting idea.

I have somewhere a figure of Falstaff. I will have to look for the maker. I also have one from Hamlet holding a skull which was made I think by Marlborough.

Think the First Legion Medieval range is inspired by Olivier’s wartime Henry the V film. The Henry V mounted figure to me is Olivier and the longbow men are also inspired by that Movie.
