Shark gives father, son ride

GALVESTON — Kevin Stevens needs a bigger boat.

In a scene eerily reminiscent of “Jaws,” Stevens and his 9-year-old son, Hunter, found themselves being dragged across the Gulf by a shark Saturday morning.

The Clear Lake pair was about three-quarters of a mile offshore near 13 Mile Road. They had been fishing all morning and were about to pack it in.

“We were catching little sharks and it was super hot,” Hunter said. “We were about to go in and we heard this big z-o-o-om from the fishing pole.”

At the other end of the line was a blacktip shark. Kevin estimates it was between 6- and 7-feet long. The kayak the two were in is only a 12-footer.

With Hunter manning a video camera, Kevin started reeling the shark in. Then, it took off.

“It looked like we had a motor on the boat,” Hunter said. “He dragged us two beaches down, then he dragged us back.”

They both found the ride exhilarating.

“It’s kind of fun,” said Kevin Stevens. “When you catch a big fish and they pull you around, it’s called a ‘Texas sleigh ride.’”

He said he was never nervous during the jaunt.

“The video looks more dangerous than it actually was. The kayak is made for big people and carrying gear and it’s made to go through surf,” he said.

After a little more than an hour, Kevin succeeded in reeling the shark in close enough so that the pair could get a good look at the beast. Then he cut it loose. The battle had left him gassed.

“I’ve been fishing my whole life and have caught thousands of sharks, but this is one of the hardest fights I’ve had,” he said.

The escapade whetted Hunter’s desire to grow up and be a marine biologist.

“There are so many cool things in the ocean, and I want to learn about all of them,” he said.

When he gets back to school this week Hunter will have a great story for his classmates about the fish that took them away.

“I don’t know if anyone will believe me,” he said.
