It is with concern that I share this email we (MFCA) received from Dick Pielin and Joe Berton of the MMSI, regarding Shep:

"Dear Friends and Members,

On Monday morning our good friend, Shep Paine, suffered a stroke. Joe Berton went to pick him up for our weekly "Breakfast Club" and found him near his bed, conscious but unresponsive. Joe called 911 right away, staying with Shep until the paramedics arrived. The emergency team stabilized him and transported him to the closest hospital, Community First Medical Center. During the day Shep completed numerous tests and the medical staff are accessing his condition now. Early indications point to a serious stroke. The doctors will continue to evaluate his condition with several more scans and tests.

Right now Shep seems comfortable, in stable but critical condition. He is sedated. He also has a breathing tube and they are dealing with his kidney dialysis. They have his complete medical history. The staff is very caring and considerate.

He will not be having visitors yet. More information will be available as the doctors determine the severity of the stroke.

Please keep Shep in your thoughts and prayers.

Joe Berton

YES ... Shep will be in my thoughts and prayers.
It is because of his books on diorama making that I stated into modeling many, many years ago.
He will always reign as one of the greatest ever. If there ever was a Modeling Hall of Fame ... he would be a first ballot winner.

Sadly,

Very sorry to hear of his passing. His models for Monogram and diorama " How to" instructions included in each kit were like gold for an 11 year old boy. I had never seen anything like them.A real inspiration for us all.
A true master and craftsman.

Yes, it was confirmed yesterday that Shep passed away over the weekend. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, and everyone in the hobbies he did so much to encourage. I've been seeing the same posts over and over, "He really inspired me..." and "It was his 'Tips on Building Dioramas' that encourage me to try for more..." And his encouragement to everyone who met him at the shows, at the club meeting or who were invited to visit Shep at his home or tour Chicago with him. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered.

Very sad news. His passing is a great loss to the modelling community. He was an extremely talented man and a leader in the hobby. A gentleman and a gentle man. RIP Shep. Trooper

Very sad news............as others have mentioned, his "how to" instructions in the Monogram models were the main reason why I bought them as a kid.

R.I.P. Mr Paine.

Shep Paine took the military plastic kits to a new level. His books and instruction sheets on dioramas set the pace on making better quality models. I saw Shep at many shows through the years and admired his work at MMSI. I am sad we lost another pioneer of the hobby. John
