Hi All,

I am intrigues by this siege and came across two illustrations by Richard Caton Woodville Jr on the same subject. An engraving and a simple coloured rendition of the same.

Did the artist ever drew a more detailed oil or watercolour painting?

Hi Victor,

The original seems to be the property of the National Army Museum in England with the description that it was painted as 'watercolour en grisaille'. I understand that means painted in monotones.

Here is the catalogue reference-

They also describe it as a drawing, so it might be worth contacting them.

I have seen colourised versions like you have shown in the form of postcards and cigarette cards.

Hi Scott and Katzie Kid,

Thanks for your replies. I guess it confirms that Woodville only ever did this bw watercolor. I really like the composition of this painting. It has tremendous detail and I would have loved to see this fully painted. The colourised versions don't do the original any justice. The Collingwood painting is obviously based on Woodville's original work. The other Badajoz forlorn hope paintings are quite interesting.

Victor,

are you going to transform this painting into a 3-D diorama ???

No problems getting figures for it, Alexanders Toy Soldiers make a good range of castings including this set of a Storming party

Hi John,

You are pre-empting my thoughts on this? hahaha.

It's a possibility. I really like the dramatic composition of this specific painting. I think I understand why the watercolour was in black and white, presumably as the storming was done during darkness. But I prefer colour and if I were to make this as a diorama, I would probably do this in colour.

A couple of Sharpe's tv episodes had a forlorn hope storming castles incl Badajoz carrying climbing ladders. I would probably use Airfix Collector's figures for this piece as I have a stash of them... Mind you, this is just a possibility.
