Hi Guys,

Someone offered me a silk road elephant. I like it very much, but what would be a good price to pay as I do not want to be to on the cheap side but also not overpaying.

Any suggestions?

Regards

Never had one but I know they aren't cheap as it originally retailed for $255.

If memory serves me correctly, I believe Louis said there were two versions - the first in metal and the second in polystone.

Thanks guys,

usefull information. Can you someone tell the difference between the lead and the polystone elephant. I think it must be the weight and the one I saw was quite heavy.

Yes, Lawrence is correct, there were both metal and polystone versions of the Silk Road Elephant, which is a truly magnificent set. As you noted, Richard, the metal version is the heavier (and it is quite heavy) and the more sought after. I have the metal version, and it is a magnificent and elegant set.

I recall seeing pix of the Silk Road series before I started collecting toy soldiers. Loved it then and really regret that I didn't start collecting sooner so that I could have acquired some of those pieces.

Sorry, a bit OT as my comments really add nothing to the Elephant discussion, but geez I like this setup. That building / gateway... those troops... that elephant....GREEN with envy.

Larry purchased the entire Silk Road and Imperial Chinese Army, with one of the Great Wall Gateways, all at once from Jim Hillestad of the Toy Soldier Museum. Since then, he has added the original Imperial Chinese Tent, and all the glossy Chinese related figures, and his collection of K&C Asian related miniatures is the most complete I know of, with the exception of Steven Chong, who literally has everything.

Lawrence- that is an amazing shot. The depth and breadth of your collection is off the charts!! Thanks for sharing bud.

Steven has everything and in duplicates and the same figures with different paint schemes. If you are headed to the Westcoaster, you should try to locate him - though that may be difficult as he will be scavenging for all the K&C glossies :smile2:

Jules,
I do the same when I come across some great collections and kick myself for not getting this or that set and then I take a deep breath and take a different perspective. Just think of all the GREEN you are saving and not having to dust  All the best, Lawrence
