I was watching the last of the mohicans (1992) last night and found positive proof of the lack of snazzy as it relates to 35th regiment at fort william henry.

The regimental colors of the 35th would be a red orange as depicted in the current frontline figures. However, for the movie the 35th flag colors are a royal blue. This flag had to be made for the movie itself, as the pattern is total fiction. The red/orange just wasn"t snazzy enough for the film.

This movie is puzzling in many ways. Great music, great fort william henry set, and great artillery duel.

On the other hand, the 42nd highland regiment is central to the siege in the movie, but historically the 42nd wasn't at the battle. Highlanders = snazzy, so put them in the movie!!!

So, so many plot changes from the book.

General webb knew about the siege, but not in the movie. He does in the book!! I am talking to the screen at this point in the movie.

Colonel monroe lives in the book

love interests

book: Uncas/cora and duncan/alice
movie: Hawkeye/cora and uncas/alice

huron village movie ; delaware village book --- very different!!!

There is a bbc masterpiece theater production of the last of the mohicans that is vey faithful to the book, still available on dvd at amazon. The sets are no where near the movie standard, but the plot line is faithful. RUNNING TIME 5 HOURS AND 44 MINUTES.

I got this one today from Netflix...2 parts...1971...supposedly a much closer version to the novel...

Mike,

That is the BBC production shown on PBS's Masterpiece Theater. Watched 3 episodes last night. The Indian village scenes and the old chief are my favorites.

Ken...it got decent reviews...most of them said it was a much more accurate depiction of the book than the Daniel Day Lewis version...I'm gonna wait until disc 2 arrives before I start this one...I think it's 8 episodes...a good night of tv...

Makes me wonder why John hasn't done more Highlanders.

Ken...this movie stinks...bad...really bad...if you made it through 3 episodes...you're a better man than me...it looks like it was shot out of a garage...when I saw Hawkeye in a coon skin cap and a flower embrodered leather jacket...I gave up...it was really tough to even get that far...

Hi Ken and Michael,
As child I watched the 1971 BBC production of L.M. and loved it. Ever since that I have been hooked on the French and Indian war.
Cheers,
Benjamin

Mike,
I bought this a year or two ago.I got through it but I was straining.I gave it to somebody because I knew I never would watch it again. My two favorite movies are LOTM and the Patriot.Historically accurate? No way but very enjoyable.

Mike,

Agreed the production values are poor, think the outside shots were shot on video and the interiors on film so really strange in that sense. And the actor playing Maqua literally spits his out his dialogue, annoying at best. However, the storyline is very faithful to the book that is it's blessing.

The plot differences between the Book (1826) and the poplar 1992 LOTM movie are massive and I find the changes not always for the better.

James Fenimore Cooper's view of white/Indian relationships and race are much better presented in the BBC production. And Cooper's discussion of the practice of scalping goes in an unexpected direction - no idea if it is accurate or simply fiction, but I found it suprising.

Why makle Montcalm a conspiring villain as in the movie?

Plus it is great fun (least for me) to count up the differences between which of the central characters die.

Book - Cora Dies, Duncan Lives, Colonel Munro Lives, Alice Lives.
Move - Cora Lives, Duncan Dies, Colonel Munro Dies, and Alice Dies.

And I still very much enjoy the scene in the BBC production of the old Delaware Chief (Episode 6 or 7), a the Huron Chief as in the movie.

But as every single member of this forum knows, there is no excuse for having the wrong regimental colors., none, nade, zippo - shame on the Movie !!!

Disc 2 arrived today...I never opened it...it wasn't inside my house for a full minute...

Benjamin...as a kid I might have loved it too...

Marco...I'm with you...this is a stinker...

Ken...with your current project...I can see you struggling through it...

everybody else...be forewarned...this movie is 3 thumbs down...

RE: PBS Last of the Mohicans

"The movie was shot in Scotland, so while they manage to capture the flavor of forests, forts, and wilderness, they do not have the underbrush and true wildness of American forests."

That's a good point...I saw when Magua escaped from the ambush in the very beginning...there was no underbrush...that was the cleanest forest I have ever seen...

Mike-
I gather you didn't like it. ;) "Last of the Mohicans" is a fictional story to begin with, so I can live with a few changes in the movie. What I hate are the mandatory romances in movies like "Pearl" and "Flyboys." Just awful stuff. And who knew the Germans all flew red triplanes in WWI?
