Around 3 am, I marched right down to the Reever, swam across the channel in Stalingrad like water temperatures, and before I could reach the shallow flats (channel is only 30 feet wide)....."SCREECH!" (sound of baitcaster reel clicker as line starts flying off)

Monster snook ate my finger mullet! Tough fight, as I was swimming in water over my head, in the black of night.

Finally pull him in, and as he was way too big (slot size is 28-32") was releasing him, when...."WHAM!" A 7-8 foot hammerhead grabs him by the head, and a tug of war ensues (he was violating the law, he had no snook stamp and it was over size limit). I won, I guess. Poor snook was dead. I officially protest the actions of that hammerhead!

Ironic, I was targeting redfish, big mangrove snapper, and hopefully a 4-6 ft hammerhead, to grill for the B-Ball games today. End up with the second biggest snook I've ever caught. (he was 36lbs)

Thats my size 14 Croc next to him, for scale. You can see some of the damage from the shark. Dang thing had half of the snook in its mouth during the struggle.

Snook, to y'all not from Florida, is considered our number one inshore game fish. So good to eat, its illegal to sell/serve in restaurants, and you can only keep one, (longer than 28" and smaller than 32". thats a tiny window*) plus you need a special "Snook Stamp". Also, they are only in season from September through November, and March through April.

*The reason for the odd slot size limit? RASCALISM! All snook are born male, and when they get to about 28" long, transgender and become female when they get about 32". During that time, they dont eat as much. Thus, you usually catch a hundred snook under 28", and 50 over 32", before getting lucky and catching a keeper slotty. Stupid, I say, as I see hundreds of too big or too small snook "released" that die. Should be you can keep one snook, any size. Would save more fish that way.
