For those of you who don't know, Kulmbach Show (every second year) is probably the oldest Toy/Model Soldier show in the World, having started in the early 30's.
Kulmbach is a lovely little north Bavarian Town dominated by an huge hill upon which sits the medieval fortress of Plassenburg, which now contains, among other things, the National Collection of German Toy Soldiers.
NO! it is not just flats! I estimate that 40% of the huge offerings will be "rounds", from a great variety of manufacturers from all over Europe. Guys many of you will never have heard of!
Figures are both painted and blank, in all sizes and descriptions.
This will be my 4th time at Kulmbach. Two years ago there was a fairly big UK and US contingent, who with the many English speakers in attendance makes it fairly easy for the linguistically challanged.
The great thing about this show is that it is over 3 days (this year 9-11 August) so one can take time out to have a Bier (or 2) and know it will still be there when one returns to the show. The second great thing is that it is free admission! (so you are not penalised for those periods at the Pub!)
Der Zinnfigur show is the second biggest event in the town's annual calandar. The first occurs a week before, it is the "Brewing" Show. Kulmbach is home to Germany's top "Brewing" University. It used to have 5 Brewerys of its own (not bad for a town of only 26,000 inhabitants)
Both shows are heavily supported by the town council, and the Burgomeister usually does the official opening. The venue for the TS show is the huge tent (bigger than the ones at Munich's Oktobar Fest) which is used for the Brewing Show.
If any of the "Kulmbach Team" from 2011 reads this, please let me know whether or not you are going this year. Maybe, we can do some "planning" so that we all get the most out of the trip.
"Gruss Gott!"
Bob

During my time in Germany years ago I passed through Kulmbach many times. Wish I would have known about the displays back then. !!!

I would love to go, but won't be able to this time around, either.

Minor point, a Franke would probably take issue with describing Kulmbach as a Bavarian town ;) Very good brewing town.

Prost!

The date of this show is always trouble for me I don't go back to Germany until the last week of August every year this year its the 27th . I would love to see this show  but on a good note I have spent a few days in Kulmbach and I can say even without the show a visit to Plassenburg Castle is well worth the stop they have two Great Museums the one of Toy Soldiers and the other which was even more FANTASTIC for me and that one is the Military of Frederick the Great which houses the finest collection I have seen. Its a cool place to walk around and still has the guard and barracks houses used by Fredericks troops , the Bier is also not bad :wink2: . If anyone is planning to go to the show feel free to pm me, I can recommend a nice place to stay in the Altstadt within walking distance if your in shape ( all up hill ) and if not they will provide a taxi as well. Regards Gebhard

Having never been to a German TS show - just about anything would be nice to see. I do remember having a stein or three when I had a bit of time off on exercises around Northern Germany back in the sixties - so - a couple of snaps (NOT schnapps) of you and some chums having a break might stir a few memories too{sm4}

Hope you have a great time - now how far is Kulmbach from South West France - let me see.................Hmmm?...............turn right after Switzerland .......wow! that's a long drive! :Djb

HI Jb,
I think you misunderstood my post I said "The date of this show is always trouble for me I don't go back to Germany until the last week of August every year this year its the 27th" meaning we flyout on the 27th and the show falls on the 9th -11th this year so I can't attend. My offer still stands for the pictures of the town and Castle as well as the two Museums though. It would be a long drive for you but one that would be one hellofa road trip I think ..Cheers Gebhard

Bob,
Kulmbach is the "Mecca" for flats and I for one am green with envy, Kulmbach is on my bucket list.
I started hard core into flat in '09 and have been trying to pick up as many of the sets from a particular Russian editor/artist, small sets nicely presented, extremely well painted. Perhaps I could show you some examples and if you come across some sets you could get contact info for me? I would owe you one and would be happy to pay up when you called in that mark!
