What is it awarded for and what is its equivalent medal in a combat situation?

It is awarded for heroism in situations that do not involve actual combat with an enemy. It is of higher precedence than a Bronze Star and is equivalent to a Disinguished Flying Cross. Hooah.

I thought it was the equivalent of the Distinguished Service Medal, but you are probably correct. I know that the Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force award them but I am unclear about the Coast Guard.

You are correct...Is usually awarded for saving fellow soldiers lives, not in combat and not in the normal performance of some hazardous duties.

For example....if a hand grenade instructor when teaching the method of throwing a live grenade encounters a panicked student who drops the live grenade and the instuctor acts by retrieving the grenade and safely throws it clear and saves both their lives...the grenade instuctors action would not be considered an act of heroism because that's how a grenade instructor is expected to perform in his duty.

The Soldiers Medal is a rarely awarded distinction.
