Hello from sunny New Zealand.
Yesterday I wondered the 200 or so meters to all things Regal and spent a pleasant hour with the Farley brothers of Regal Enterprises and picked up my order of a Saxon shield wall from the battle of Hastings.
I don't normally get that gushing and excited about new purchases but these were superb figures. Well cast (about William Britain proportions) and brilliantly hand painted in a commissioned matte style (they normally do gloss). They look as if they have come straight out of the Bayeux Tapestry. They are done to a high standard but have that homespun feel to them.
I ordered 65 figures in total including Harold, Wessex wind sock and fabled fighting man flags. The fighting man flag was reported to be green (and given to the pope by William after victory) and so Harold has a green cloak and his housecarls (royal bodyguard) have green shields. The rest of the shield wall is made up of armoured Saxon troops, unarmoured militia and a few archers (Saxon armies had archers but not in great quantities).
I mixed in some old Conte figures and newer William Britain ones. Next up are the Normal cavalry and an order has already been placed and casting will start in the next week or so. Then its ranks of Norman archers (long and crossbow) and finally Norman infantry.
The Shield wall makes for s stunning centrepiece to any dark/medieval age collection. And of course for me its a lot cheaper than buying from the normal manufactures. No shipping, import duties and Regals figures are cheaper. Plus they make what I want on a commissioned basis.
For me at the moment it's one extreme to another. I am focused on Regal figures for all the above reasons and Thomas Gunn figures and planes. The planes are keeping me poor at the moment but they are just to good to resist.
Enjoy the photo's and i will get back to cataloging the collection which I am half way through - around 5,000 figures photographed and details input into the vast spreadsheet. Once finished I will start some more dioramas and as requested in some quarters do some shots of the TG RAF Lysander, as French resistance fighters tangle with a German patrol on the hunt for the British agent.
