Over on the Armorama site (a modelers' site) there is a nice photo feature on Normandy buildings by Jim Rae. There are 43 color photos that might be helpful for those of us who buy the unpainted foam buildings and want to paint them in appropriate colors (and can't afford the plane ticket to France).

Over the last few years one of the details that has hit me is the amount of "tan" shades on many French buildings. Growing up in midle America I usually think of a brick building in shades of brownish-red with masonary being a light grey. In looking at photos from making dioramas it struck me that "tan" shades were (are?) much more common in European towns.

I imagine the local materials, especially the local clays mined for use in making bricks, has a major effect on the final color, any pigments added by the brickmaker excepted.
