Both sides in the Spanish Civil War used popular American cartoon characters as artwork on the aircraft used during the conflict. While the German Condor Legion flying for the Nationalists favored Mickey Mouse, the Republican forces flying Russian I-16 Polikarpovs used Popeye and Betty Boop. it must have been surreal to see these cartoon favorites of the 1930s fighting it out in the skies over Spain.
