Yo Troopers, thought you Rebels over the big Country would like to see the AWI Chess set made by Chas Stadden, dont know why I am showing you ungrateful lot this after all we did for you:rolleyes:, and then kicked us out:mad: lol. Great looking set if you were lucky enough to own one:(. The Tower of London Chess set is even more Stunning, but as of yet unable to get any photos of it, only seen the odd piece. A big thanks to Ben for sending these photos over to me from the USA;).

Thanks for posting the pictures. It is a real stunner of a set. -- lancer

Great set! King & Country did a cool glossy Waterloo Chess Set back in 1991. A photo of mine is posted somewhere on the K&C Glossy threads.

Yo Bob, keep this to yourself lol, I was born in the UK of Irish stock, hence the ex Queens Own Hussars, and the Irish kicked the Brits out, but I sneaked back in;).

Nice looking chess sets! I,ve played chess since I was a kid and its like a double bonus when chess is mixed with toy soldiers!
Are any of you others guys here chess players?
Tim, I was an avid player many years ago when I had people around me at work who could play. A transfer to a new station where no one played put an end to it. Have played computers quite a bit but haven't even done that in 10 years. I loved the game but was never as good at it as I thought I should have been. Still have my chess set, (classic wood pieces), so some day I may get back to it. -- Al

I miss playing a good game of chess, I have not played in quite awhile myself, its tough to find anyone who knows the game well enough to put up a good fight. My father taught me and a good friend from grade school to play when we were young and it was great because we were both at the same playing level and still get together once in awhile to play still to this day. He would pick up books to improve his game and start beating me then I would get some books and learn some more moves to beat him then he picked up an early computor set and he would get better and it was back and forth.
We were hard core for awhile but only pretty much played each other till we found the chess get together day down at a local church basement, there were some really good players there and one was a MASTER class rated chess player. He could play against 4 guys at once and win all 4 games. I only played him once and it was him against 4 of us(all good players) I held out the longest and it came down to a couple of pawns each in a pawn race and he beat me by one move for a new queen. He had white and I lasted the longest out of the 4 of us(he destroyed the other guys quick).
What a great player this guy was.
I never got rated and only played down the church here and there while that lasted but the guys I played were rated around 1500-1600 on average and I could hold my own with those guys no problem so I guess thats around where I would rate?
Great mind game!!!

Yeah, I really got into reading and studying a lot of the masters. Dover Press published a lot of chess books and I read many of them. I really liked Tarrasch, Pillsbury, Capablanca, and Nimsovich. I never quite got the hand of Nimsovich though. I was never a very strong player although I was good enough to light up my fellow firefighters on occasion. Been a long time. -- Al
