Yo Troopers, just got back from the UK with the Chas Stadden American Revolutionary War Chess set man its stunning. Sneaked into the UK under the cover of darkness lots of bandits down the M1 around Nottingham, Leicester, and Sussex lol. Met my first Treefroger "Gazza" who picked the set up for me, and what a true gentleman he is, thinking of making him an honorary Hussar, many thanks again mate:D. Also worth a mention saw my first K&C:eek: in the flesh, all the Tigers etc, but Gazza showed me two Naps and asked me what was the difference. I couldn't tell them apart then he told me one was K&C the other I think Del Padro, only difference was the price.
Anyway just took some quick photos of the Mahogany Chess Table, its says underneath No1 of four made and its a real craftsman made table specially for this chess set. Either side of the table its inlaid with a brass plate with the names of the chess pieces, each corner there is on the American side the flags of the US and they are enameled colours, same on the other side for the British army. Will post some better photos when its had a polish and the legs attached. Also on the next post a quick shot of the chess pieces.
Bernard.

Yo Troopers a quick shot of the Chess pieces, will post them individually when I get sorted out, with some close up shots. The Black bases are the American army.
Bernard. Notice the top of the Queen pieces with the flags are slightly bent over, my mate trooper is going to tell me how to get them straight without snapping the piece off, haven't got the bottle to try it yet lol.
Bernard.

Hi Bernard! :p:D.......glad you got back safely :D

What an awesome looking chess set!:cool: This has got to be the icing on the cake.....very, very nice.

Jeff

Gorgeous set. I love that Tarleton piece. Congratulations! -- Al

Wonderful looking set- congratualations- my favorite pieces are the mounted figures.

Looks like Washington is the "King" for the Continentals- he'd be rolling in his grave on that one. :)

Congratulations, Bernard, that is an excellent piece! The figures look really great, but that's to take nothing away from the board. What scale are the figures, or are they of the same scale as the statues?

Now the big question--do you play? ;)

Prost!
Brad

Brilliant !!!

I love this era and seeing these beautifully painted figures all lined up and the fine workmanship on the board makes me very envious of your aquisition.

John

Hi Bernard,

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! You chess set is most impressive and I am very glad the set has wound up in your collection! Thanks for sharing these wonderful figures with us.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Yo Troopers, thanks for the kind comments guys. First think I might have explained it wrong Scott, its only the table they made four of, the chess set itself came with a chess board and I don't have the issued number of sets for this one, but taking it as read it could be the same as the ACW which was 1000 Ltd Edition. I will have to wait until someone has the documents with this set, I have them for the other three sets issued. That's how come I got such a good buy, it was listed on ebay as a Military Chess Set and no mention it was by Chas Stadden. If you knew the price of these sets in the early 1980s you would probably faint lol.

But do yourself a favour guys over in the USA, if you get offered one of these chess sets go for it, they are just something else and I think most of them went over to the USA Chas Stadden had an agent in the USA. Dave MNamiot got offered one sometime back for coppers and refused it:(.

Anyway took some close ups of the pieces. Americans. The Army of the Continental Congress. First The King & Queen: George Washington & General Horatio Gates. Second The Bishops: The Marquis de Lafayette & General Nathaniel Greene. Third The Knights: Trooper 2nd Connecticut Light Horse & Captain Moylan's Light Dragoons. Fourth The Castles: Captain Rhode Island Artillery Train & Gunner Captain John Lamb's New York Artillery. Fifth The Pawns: Smallwood's Maryland Regiment.
Next will list the British Army.
Bernard.

Yo Trooper get rid of that tory stuff. We don't permit that here in the former colonies. General Washington will be rotating in his coffin at the thought of it :D

lmao, we still have the stiff upper lips lol, but George Washington was something else defeating the might of the British Army with his Motley crew;).
Bernard.

Motley crew, Sir? I am wounded to the quick! I just may have to come back to Ireland, Sir, and administer you the punishment you so richly deserve :D And this time don't tell me you're on holiday!

I don't think it was Motley Crue, I think it was Anthrax. Air guitar!

Prost!
Brad

...Looks like Washington is the "King" for the Continentals- he'd be rolling in his grave on that one. :)

And he might find it amusing that his personal coat of arms is used on the bases of the American pieces, and that the cabinet maker carried that over to his table as well.

Prost!
Brad

Yo Brad thanks for the info on the Washington coat of arms.
Just put the table together its a superb piece of craftsmanship specially made from Mahogany for this set.

It was made by John Wright of Luton Befordshire and says No1 of four made, it must have been quite an expensive item to add to an already very expensive Chess set for the 1980s. The other sets would have had just a Chess board.

Notice the brass plate on the front says American War of Independence and not Revolutionary War. The brass inlaid plates and the enameled flags are really superb. The Chess squares are 2 1/2" as all the bases are 2".
Bernard.

Yo Mike cheers mate, I am really well pleased with it. The thing being with these Chas Stadden Chess sets I have looked at 10s & 10s of thousands of Chess sets on ebay everyday cannot see anything that comes close to them, especially in our collecting theme Toy/Model Soldiers. Some of the prices they ask as well are just unbelievable. I did say in an earlier post nobody wants to pass on these sets if they are offered one, you wont get a table like this with them except if its the Waterloo set or the Tower of London set. They were both commissioned sets and both were issued with tables. Which is another big problem how to move it from A to B. The ACW I was lucky with still having the orignal foam for shipping the models in but cost $231.00 shipping. This Revolutionary War set I had to go over to the UK and pick it up. But then its well worth the effort and cost if you get a good deal on it.
Bernard.
