Yo Troopers, think we have all heard of one of England's most famous landmarks The Tower of London. Anyway coming towards the 900th anniversary they wanted something really outstanding to celebrate such an important event. What could encapsulate nine centuries of England's history in a single offering that would be worthy of The Tower. After many suggestions The Constable of The Tower and his Lieutenants decided on a Chess set. Then of course the big question for them was who to put in the set after 900 years, and who could take on such a task and complete it in time. They commissioned Chas Stadden, what an honour for Chas to be asked to make such an important set for such a main event in English history.
The pieces they decided that fitted the Towers history the best were.
White Pieces. (Good Guys) Black Pieces. (Bad Guys)
King. William 1. King. The Duke of Monmouth.
Queen. Elizabeth 1 Queen. Anne Boleyn.
Knight. William de Mandeville. Knight. Sir Thomas Moore.
Knight. The Duke of Exeter. Knight. Sir Walter Raleigh.
Bishop. Bishop Gundulf. Bishop. Archbishop Laud.
Bishop. Thomas a Bekett. Bishop. Archbishop Cranmer.
Pawn. Henry V111 Yeoman Warder. Pawn. Edward 111 Archer.
Just a quick few points, when they executed Anne Boleyn, they did her a favour hired the Calais Headsman so it would be quick lol. Can you imagine hey Anne we are doing you a favour girl got the Top Headsman, you wont feel a thing. Monmouth wasn't so lucky it was butchers work, had to finish him off with a Knife. Archbishops Laud last words before the axe fell were, " I am coming Lord as fast as I can". They didn't like Archbishop Cranmer very much, poor soul was burnt at the Stake at Oxford. Boy they were gruesome days if you didn't do the Kings bidding. Poor old Sir Walter Raleigh was executed to appease the Spanish. But I bet they didn't give all the Gold back he plundered off the Spanish. Fascinating stuff dont you think guys.
Bernard.
