I currently own volume 1 and volume 2 of this trilogy. Has volume 3 ever been released? Or any idea if and when it will be released?

I also have these two books plus the After Stalingrad book covering the Red Army's winter offensive. But I must confess i really want the third book. I originally thought when i bought them that the After Stalingrad book was the third book and was quite disappointed when i discovered I was mistaken. I have no idea whether it will be released or not, but I can't imagine that these were very big sellers.

If you are interested in reading another great book about the war on the eastern front, specifically the first few months of Barbarossa, check out Operation Barbarossa: Germany's Defeat in the East. Really interesting point of view and far more "readable" than the Glantz books are.

Glantz and I live in the same town. Maybe I will track him down. I tried the second book and reading it was a bit like being at Stalingrad. A bit dense. But maybe I will circle back to it one day. Definitely not for the faint at heart. I checked around on the third book but didn't see any information.

I have the first two volumes and have not started either. I am waiting for the third to be released before I begin volume 1. It'd be great if you found out some information on this. I have searched the internet and have found no information regarding the last part.

Small world. Turns out he lives about 10 miles from me and his number is in the phone book. Maybe I should give him a call? I bet he knows when the book is coming out!

Can't wait for this to be released! Thanks for getting the information. Did you actually call him?

I found with Amazon and a number of other book sellers they do provide a title when you look up Volume 3 of this series and it is indeed a Glantz book about Stalingrad but it isn't actually volume 3 of this series. I did a bunch of searching for it last year and found the Spring 2013 release date in another forum. I contacted the University of Kansas Press to ask but all 6 emails I sent were never answered. Maybe they somehow knew I used to live in Manhattan, KS where Kansas State is located so I got the Intentional Ignore. :D

Ah, my youth with the 1st Infantry Division!

I saw a program a time ago on the Military Channel that was about Stalingrad where Glantz was interviewed and spoke of these books which is what first sent me chasing them down. What intrigued me was that for these books he reviewed previously unavailable and never before researched archived Russian field reports and communications from small units and various combat groups around the battle zone. He said he based his analysis on the progress of the battle and the outcome(s) on those reports and field communications rather than the command level summaries he said were previously used as reference material when writing about Stalingrad. I could see how that could offer an entirely different view of things since many of those were going to have been written in 'real time' rather than summarized after the fact. He said what came from his research was a substantially different view of the battle that was a departure from the standard retelling of the tale in than many smaller and often ignored actions had a far greater impact than previously thought. So, as another poster said, I want all three before I wade in.

Updated info:

The Stalingrad Trilogy, volume 3: Endgame in Stalingrad: The Victorious Soviet Counteroffensive and Death of German Sixth Army
Lawrence, KS: University Press of Kansas - Forthcoming April 2013

"Just a short update on the Stalingrad series, about which folks seem to be anxious. Thanks to some help from some German friends, volume three has 'morphed' into a 950-page narrative and 600-page companion volume containing both German and Soviet documents (including Manstein's and Paulus' and Schmidt's and Schulz's (chiefs of staff) correspondence, most key German orders, and Sixth Army's long-lost documents). I am in the process of proofing both, hopefully, to send the two books to the publisher by the end of February. The two volumes are as definitive as I can make them, and they answer most if not all of the controversial questions about the Soviet offensive and Manstein's relief efforts."

Wow! Sounds like a helluva set! Your description puts a knot in my gut because all that sounds pretty expensive. I hope this isn't going to be too bad of a bank-buster, less than $100 USD anyway. There are so many books I would love to have on WWII history but they are often priced more for the collector than the reader. I bet I could buy a small car for what I currently have invested in my WWi/WWII library.

One thing about Glantz is that no matter which of his books you pick up, there are not many other American writers who have the same knowledge base as him. His research into the Red Army and the Soviet Union is very impressive based on the two books I have read.

Looks as though volume 3 has been pushed back into 2014. It may take longer to read than the entire war lasted.

Volume 3 of Glantz's trilogy - Endgame at Stalingrad - will be released in April '14 as two separate books. Both of which will be 800 pages long! The price is $40 apiece w/another companion volume of 840 pages containing source material.
