Just rewatched Stalingrad,
more of a series of great set pieces rather a complete film. The snow scenes in particular are well done. Could have been a great film if it told the story more completely rather than jumping from one event to another.
the ending was haunting showing how devasted the russian people were and how utterly destroyed the german army was

must reread the book again ,

Its a great book , and he followed it up with a great sequel, the return match in 'Berlin'. Eastern front was an eppic battleground .
Great image in the film of the germans in snow gear hauling an artillary gun through a blizzard

Yup, "Berlin" is also an excellent book.
Armaggedon by Max Hastings is worth a look as well, and I'm going to try and lay my hands on the new MH about the fall of Japan this weekend. Can't remember the name of it offhand. Think it begins with a V.

Harry, its called Nemesis.I have it but have not read it yet, really enjoyed Berlin and Stalingrad,Armageddon is also a good (but sombre)read.

Rob

I've picked it up and it's next on my list after I finish Rick Atkinson's Day of Battle, which, considering my work load and upcoming year end projects at work, may be awhile.

Thanks Rob,
I'm going to try and track it down today once the shops open. Think I might get it in the Virgin Mega-Store over in the Burjeman Center (5-minute walk from here), and I'll see if I can obtain a few other books on my must-read list while I'm at it.

Speaking of this movie...I purchased it for 50.00 a few years ago, it is very difficult to buy in DVD, I bout it in Germany so you can either listen to it in German (with sub titles) or English, I would be willing to sell it or trade for something in the way of K&C, if you are interrested send me a P.M.

WELLINGTON

PS It is mint

These are all probably the same movie but I don't know which one is newer or better quality. Can someone shed some light here.

Alex,
Interesting pics as I had not seen all of them; whatever you do, DO NOT buy the one on the bottom left, the 1958 version as it is terrible. There is one scene where a German is walking through the "rubbled out" Stalingrad and you can clearly see the background canvas of the ruined buildings moving back and forth.

The 1992 version with German subtitles is the best, it has added footage over the dubbed version, I think that is the top right one, not sure though..........

One more which I think this is the one I see the most of on ebay.

Thanks for the warning George on the 1958 version.

Alex,
That is the 1992 version you are showing there, if you buy it, make sure it is the subtitled version and not the dubbed one. If you do a search on YouTube, you can see two of the battle scenes from the movie, one is of the stormtroopes assaulting a factory complex and the other is a Russian T34 counterattack that is over the top violent, unreal scenes in that battle............

You should talk to the people at www.warshows.com

They know everything and anything about war movies.

It looks like they have both the 1958 and 1992 versions.

I watched it last night-and alone of course as my better half would have convicted me of being responsible for all the subsequent nightmares! I must admit that I enjoyed the film but found it highly disturbing. As with most of these films you have to almost be in the right frame of mind to view them or they really get to you as was the case last night. The word poignant comes to mind. I like when I can escape back to the toy soldier display/world where everybody plays fair and is A-OK! By the way, the subtitles where easy to follow.

Hang Tough,
Beaufighter

I couldn't agree more with Beaufighter, disturbing is an excellent way to describe this movie, brings home the brutality of Stalingrad like nothing else I've ever seen. No Hollywood "the good guys all live at the end" stuff, this movie makes the viewer feel like he too is trapped in Stalingrad and the hopelessness of the whole campaign.

The Soviet counterattack in the snow with T34's rolling up on the German positions is about the most intense combat footage I've ever seen aside from the beginning and ending scenes from SPR.............

Antony Beevor book Stalingrad, described as well, all the brutality and the incredible reality of the battle.

For me the best book of the war.

Cheers

Both versions are good films. The '58 is more centered on one central character and not as good on the battle scenes.
