"Steeds of Steel, A History of American Mechanized Cavalry in World War II" by Harry Yeide, 2008 from Zenith Press. Mr.Yeide has just added another volume to his fine series of WW2 books. His previous efforts include "The Tank Killers" - a history of the US Tank Destoyers, "Steel Victory" - a history of the independent tank battalions, "Weapons of the Tankers" - a look at the equipment and doctrine of US armored troops, and "The Longest Battle" a history of the campaign at the Roer River. The subject of US cavalry in WW2 in usually only addressed at very basic levels, now Yeide gives an in depth look at the US Army's mechanized cavalry units that served all over the world from 1941-45. The book cover the transition from horse cavalry to mechanized units with armor. He looks at the various theaters and notes the adaptability of the troopers. In Sicily, parts of Italy and areas of the Pacific the troopers had to operate dismounted. In the Pacific the US Cavaltu fought not only from armored cars, but from rubber boats, Amtracs and on foot. The book covers changing equipment, but most of the book is on the troopers and their units and how they dealt with the various challenges. A good book to add to the collection. I purchased mine through Amazon.com.
