Hi everyone, I just finished these Conte's... with some mixed feelings.... the face detail is sensational but I thought the body sculpting was a little wishy-washy... that said it's my first lot of ACW figures and I thought although not super accurate they have turned out fairly good. I have a few sets of TSSD's on the bench at the moment and that they will be fantastic once painted up.... Also have some Conte WW2 Germans and some TSSD Japanese not far off... ^&grin

all the best
marc

Another Brisbane boy who can paint! I'm getting left behind!

Really nice job on these plastic Conte figures. May I make some suggestions for the next batch? Try Vallejo paints: Grey Blue #70.943 for the pants, and Oxford Blue #70.807 for the coats and hats. After painting the faces and hair, try adding a Wash with a soft brush over the face, hair and hands. My favorite washes are by Citadel and I use "Ogryn Flesh" or "Gryphonne Sepia". A light Wash adds definition to the face, hair, and hands; as well adds a sun weathered look for these troops. Experiment!! For the ground, first paint entire in "Burnt Sienna", then dry brush the grassy areas in the green you used or a light or yellow green for a parched grass effect. Hope you like my suggestions, I learned a lot over the years from the members of this forum. Regards, Charles

thanks heaps for the ideas... I have alot of TSSD ACW figures that are primed and ready to go and I was hoping for some tips as I think the TSSD's are a lot more accurate in the sculpting. regards, marc

Hi Jack... hey we have had a week without rain....YIPEEE.... :)

I only started painting about 3 months ago and just love it.... Still learning lots.... I've collected nearly all the 1/32nd Italeri figure sets but have not started them yet... been working my way through the TSSD figures.... There is usually a model show in Brisbane each year... do you know any of the details for it...?

regards, marc

No - but I know a few people who would be interested in an excursion to see it!

You could paint the rolls on the knapsacks as greatcoats in the same color as the trousers. Blankets were sometimes kept inside the knapsack to keep them dry. The figures without rolls can be "summer" as greatcoats were turned in during warm weather. Your mileage may vary according to the campaign and battle.

I have popped off the knapsacks and swapped them around so that I don't have all "at ready" figures without blanket rolls, and all firing figures with blankets. I swap some heads around as well to vary the personalities.

BTW I like your paint scheme and choice of colors.

You are correct the TSSD figures are great for detail, but the soft plastic can lead to paint flaking; for that reason I finish off the figures with Krylon Matte Finish #1311 spray (dries in minutes). The TSSD figures I've purchased for painting are their Romans, Barbarians, and Union in Great Coats (Battle of Fredericksburg diorama). For my Boxer Rebellion diorama, I've just finished painting 20 Chinese Boxers by Armies in Plastic - AIP #5413 (these are hard plastic figures in 1/32 (54mm)). Details are less in AIP figures, but painting is easier.
