I recently purchased this piece and have a quick question(s):

It appears that this was produced in 1997, as the base of the gun deck is stamped as such. Was K&C still producing glossy figures in 1997? Is this considered glossy?

The base is a matte finish, but the 2 figures are glossy. As are the gun, rail-posts, the bell pole & the bell.

Truly beautiful set.

Peter,
Congratulations! What a find!! Yes, k&c didi glossy sets in 1997 and I believe continues to do so for the SOHK series. The set you have was done in gloss and a hard to find item. I have been searching for that set for a long time and you are one lucky collector. Should you find later on that the piece no longer fits your collection and would like to trade for it, please do not hesitate to contact me. Once again, congratulations on finding this set. Lawrence

Peter,

This is the sort of piece I need to get Lawrence to release some Canadian Mounties...nice find!

That is the Hong Kong Noonday Gun set from 1997. As Lawrence pointed out, K&C continued to produce Streets of Hong Kong figures in glossy after stopping other glossy production in 1996. My version of this set is identical to yours, with glossy figures and metal details, but a matt base.

Having been in Hong Kong and as I left just before the handover to China this is probably the one item I miss most in not getting:(

This is must be one of the handful of pieces Larry doesn't have. I was surprised when I read that.

Brad,
I would guess that this item, much more than most, would have been bought by many in Hong Kong for the subject matter.. Many of those buyers would not be TS collectors.
Prior to the handover there were a lot of various pre 1997 souvenirs produced and they sold very well (swords, plates etc).

I got some nice little wargaming size figures of RHKP riot platoon figures but regret not getting enough to complete a platoon as I found out about them too late. I was involved with a guy who produced 200mm painted Police figures which sold like hot cakes. I also had made some good mahogany models of the Blackhawk helicopter used by the Police as well as some 18"' tall wooden figures. Could say I was practicing for the future{sm4}

One of many gaps that I still need to fill with regard to K&C glossy sets. I know of only four collectors who have this set and am patiently waiting for one to show-up. For Peter, it is a great find and it will no doubt be the centerpiece of his SOHK display. Eventually, one will show up. In the meantime, the hunt goes on :smile2:

Lawrence,
The rarity factor will be because it was such an iconic part of Hong Kong and many expats who bought them probably not short of a $ so few coming up for sale.
Let us know if you get one.

I eventually had the great pleasure of trading this piece to Larry during the winter of 2012 (I think). If Larry can take a few of his prized pieces with him on his next journey, I'm sure this is one of them. May you rest in peace.
