Does anyone know of books or websites that would show the structure of motorized battalions, companies or platoons, and how vehicles were assigned. I see lots of material on structure and even vehicle totals for elements to the platoon level. What I cannot find are what those vehicles are “supposed”* to be.

For example- I see many platoons listed as having 5 vehicles. I assume that is 4 3 ton lorries and one medium staff car, but it would be nice to confirm them.

I am more interested in the 1939 to 1943 structures.

Even better would be actual manifests for Heer Panzer, PG or Motorized Infantry Divisions for Barbarossa, Typhoon or Case Blue.

*I am totally aware that the German Army had the most variation between what was listed and reality. Either is fine.

Hello Bradley,

If you are particularly interested in German Aufklärungs Abteilung / Reconnaissance Battalion try this article by Bryan Perret--

https://www.oocities.org/desertfox1891/articles/GermanRecce/GeReccBtl.html

It covers the organisation, role and development of the above. You may have to cut and paste into Google to get link to work.

Hello Panda1gen,

I am usually ok with tactical symbols but please tell me what the line represents? the rectangle with the solid dark horizontal dark line represents?

Thanks, I couldn’t get the link to work but doing some searches to find it did uncover some good stuff.

So, if I read this right, early in the war they tried to split motorized infantry sections / squads) across 2 trucks (Krupp Protze, Einheitsdiesel or Steyr 1500.) It was only later that they tried stuff an entire section into a single truck as transportation became harder to find and they eliminated the smaller vehicles.
