Reading the obituary of LAPD police chief Daryl Gates quickly made me realize that he was the Patton of my generation. To give an idea of his philosophical outlook, when he invented the first SWAT unit, it originally meant special weapons assault team, later changed to special weapons and tactics under pressure from the doves. AND, during the Iran hostage crisis, he requested the President let him & 100 of this best SWAT members get them out; all he needed was a ride. This isn't as crazy as it might sound to us nowadays, because special ops in the military was a very neglected & disparaged art form in the conventional military of that day-the pentagon still expected to be fighting 100 divisions flooding the Fulda Gap and thought spec ops was a clown side show
I would like to see a 60mm tribute to this fellow, perhaps in the collector's club domain.
