I just noticed this the other day when I was at the toy soldier shop. The officers have stainless steel swords. (except for the 1st confederate one I believe. I thought wow! Pretty cool!
Stainless is standard for Russian Connoisseur figures as it allows the edged weapon to be modeled thinner (closer to scale). I only have one FL figure (Landsknecht) with a sword which is stainless. I'm glad FL has chosen to use this material.

I do not think that FL photoetched blades are stainless steel but most probably regular steel.. I would just buff out the rust and use something like renaissance wax on the blades, same stuff i use on flintlocks, antique sword blades, etc..
