Further confirmation that the world is dumbing down. TV viewers are apparently overtaxed by even the use of an abbreviation - must have a phonetic name for channels:

On Tuesday, the Sci Fi Channel changes its name to Syfy -- pronounced "sigh-fie," the same as the current name. The idea is to expand Sci Fi's audience, but some members of that audience have expressed their displeasure.

"Perhaps the most ill-advised branding move since New Coke," wrote CNet's "Digital City" blogger Dan Ackerman.

That name change is truly absurd.

All the shows I watched on that network got canned. Battlestar and both Stargates. Maybe Caprica and Stargate Universe can bring me back... we'll see.

Another reason I cancelled my cable subscription--channels moving away from their brands. Why does SciFi have to show professional wrestling? Not that I'm knocking pro wrestling, but it's already on other channels, and it has little to do with science fiction (except, maybe, the outcomes of the matches, and some of the characters).

The Cartoon Network shows live movies, the History Channel shows little if any history, American Movie Classics interrupts movies with commercials, and edits them for content.

TV stinks.

And BBC Canada shows Canadian gardening and home renovation shows, The lost my business also. To get the BBC Canada channel you have to have the basic channels, so the home & garden shows are already on the other channel !!!! What a RIP.

I believe the name change is that SyFy will still be recognisable to exsisting subscribers but will allow new programming of non Sci-Fi material hence the name SyFy (as it doesn't stand for Science Fiction)

I think you answered your own question Brad.;):D

That's why I watch it for the science fiction.I also love the channels putting their logos on screen saying they want people to know what channel their watching. Are we considered that stupid? Also showing previews of other shows at the bottom of the screen while your watching something else, really wants to make me watch that show:mad: The Sci-Fi channel was a nice little niche channel that had some good shows (and shows not so good) but they want to expand and that's going to ruin it,IMO.

As Homer Simpson put it, when Lisa asked, "Why did they do that, Dad?"

"Because they're stupid! That's why everybody does everything!"

One of the new SyFy ads has a young and pretty bunch of actors mixed with scenes from the various shows. Could they be trying to change the image of the Science Fiction demographic? When I say that the new SyFy looks "gay" I mean "gay" as overdone and full of itself, not homosexual.

(I liked that Warehouse 13 premire even though it's Friday the 13th The TV series mixed with the warehouse from Indiana Jones.)

This drove my wife crazy! She fumed about it for at least two weeks. If they want to improve their image, I think they should work on refining the grade z movies they churn out. Whoever directs these gems makes Roger Corman look like Francis Coppola.

Sci-Fi,yes I mean Sci-Fi do some very good mini-series as they put money into them but those weekend movies are basicially the same just changing the location and type of monster.Really dull boring movies starring new unknown actors/actresses,a couple from their shows and the on the way down acters/acrtesses.

My big problem with the sigh-phi channel is Star Trek related. There are 5 ST series available for re-runs. Where are they? SF channel could show them 24 hours a day if they chose. True, 2 of the series are currently running, "Enterprise" daily and "STNG" at night every now and then. With all the junk SF shows they could at least show the good ones. And where are all the "Star Wars" films? How can a channel call itself SF and not show all of these? And then there are 100's of other SF movies... -- lancer

You have to remember that do not have the rights to these movies, they have to purchase that from the maker, be it Warner Bros, ABC, NBC, etc... The producer does not have to sell either that could be why we don't see a particular show on tv that we may want to watch.

Don't tell her about Radio Shack changing their name to "The Shack". Soon we can just grunt like apes. ;)

Legal rights and finances. I despair over the complexities of watching a simple TV show.:( -- lancer
