Hi Enrico,
I'm amazed by your collection. You've got a diverse and fantastic collection of K&C. I did not realize you were using aquariums - that's a great idea! One question, do you turn them upside down or cover the top?
Morning W.O.
I have 6 (
various sizes) aquariums that I use to house displays.
The aquariums also vary in construction methods and of course price.
Most of mine are right-side-up, i.e. with the opening at the top. That way you can get some Plexiglas, make an opening or two for the installation of lighting as needed. A few I turn upside down.
You have to look a bit carefully at the construction of the bottom framing of the tank, to make sure it is not to wide, which would talk away from your display if you turn them upside down.
Don't go to a Pet or fish store to purchase them as you will find they charge a lot more than a Walmart, a Big Lot, a Target or any Big Box stores. I generally find real cheap aquariums at yard sales or flea markets. A lot of "kids" start out thinking an aquarium is fun, but lose interest fast. Then Mom and Dad want to sell it off.
You can also find then at florist or plant stores, as they are a favorite for building a terrarium or garden scene. Florist shops also have a collection of neat diorama
stuff
In addition, you might pick up some interesting tank scenery that can be used as a jungle display or rocks or who knows what.
Generally, I pay between $8 - $20 for a tank at a store; maybe $5 at a yard sale that includes a lot of other stuff.
If you leave them top side up then any hardware store can cut a piece of Plexiglas or real glass. I tend to like shelf glass as it is generally unbreakable, doesn't scratch, is cheap and stays clear over time.
Please let me know if you have any questions, WO, or anyone for that matter.
