Hello guys:
I have fielded a lot of questions regarding my moniker/nomenclature, etc and I have enjoyed it and certainly welcome any future questions. I decided to give everyone a quick background on the 1/506th to explain a little more about "CURRAHEE"- my favorite unit!! Hated the location of the unit but the training and chain of command were second to none and were the epitome of professional soldiers.
Everyone knows the Band of Brothers story. I didn't get an overview of how prestigous the unit was until my Battalion CSM decided to "educate you ** Stupid **ing privates!!"
However, the unit performed quite admirably in Viet Nam as well. Anyway, here is a link to globalsecurity's webpage that gives a great run down of the unit. I was at Camp Greaves with the Second Infantry Division. I do believe they are back home with the 101st now and yes, while I love the 2ID, I believe that the 1/506 should still be with the 101 (though it is probably a moot point at this stage with the Brigade structure).
Of my awards and decorations and other stuff on my uniform, I was most proud of that CURRAHEE crest and I still have them. That was my first and still most favorite unit.
While stationed on the Z, our only real standing order was "Don't start an international incident"- everything else was pretty much fair game. Those loudspeakers were just God awful and I hated the NK's for blaring those stupid things 24/7- 365. But trust me, we did stupid stuff as well, like pulling alerts and mobilizations at 2, 3, or 4 am once or twice a month.
They offer tours of the DMZ. I would strongly recommend saving your money and not going. My wife told me she wanted to go there but there is no way on God's earth that is going to happen. I do know that if any of you are bird watchers, there are some extraordinary species of birds flying around there on the Z. Apparently, with little to no human interference, many different biological species can actually thrive. It was funny to watch the NKs freak out whenever some of these bird scientists (ornithologists) would start setting up these huge scopes and cameras for bird observations.
So, here you guys go.
