During the past three weeks, PBS has run a program called The Abolitionists, focusing on the struggle for abolition from the 1820s through 1865 and profiles William Lloyd Garrison, founder and publisher of the Liberator, Frederick Douglass, John Brown, Angelina Grimke and Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin; the influence of her book was so profound that when Lincoln met her, he purportedly said "Is this the little woman who made this great war?”

The series focuses on principally Douglass and Garrison but to a lesser extent Brown, Grimke and Stowe.

These are among some of the greatest Americans who ever lived and the series is well worth watching.

It can be viewed on-line at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/abolitionists/player/
