I'm curious about this TV series that I saw as a child, why was reversed the colors of the cavalry? The blue color is darker trousers the shirt, as shown in the photo.

Boy that is a blast from the past. The short answer is that the regular soldiers usually did wear dark shirts and light pants.

Rusty was of course, not official. Perhaps they thought that color worked better with Rinty's coat.:D

I have seen official photographs of a light top cavalry uniform as well but can't put my fingers on one at the moment.

Haven't seen that in years. The color reversal is probably an attempt to make Rusty stand out in black & white as I don't think the series was broadcast in color. It has been 50 years since I have seen the show so my memory could be wrong. Some of those old shows were filmed in color but broadcast in BW. -- lancer

I don,t think when they did the series historical accuracy was very heavy on their minds.

I used to watch this show when I was a kid in France in B&W (we didn't have any color TV back then :)). Thanks for the memory!

I watched this show too in the 50s and until a few years ago had the Marx Fort Apache with figures of Rin Tin Tin, Rip Masters, Rusty . The original film prints were sepia (brown) but broadcast in b&w.

I found these on Ebay tonight:
