We can never really know what warfare was like thousands of years ago. The mists of time have covered up the tracks fairly well and we are left with a few tantalising clues. Historians have much debated the size of the Persian army at around Homer's Iliad which stated millions of men were put in the field. I suspect this was to make Greek victories seem that more fantastic. The size of the world population and ability to keep a large army in the field would suggest that the real size of the Persian army would be counted in tens of thousands.
The brightly coloured pajama style dress has also been widely debated. There are of course some clues with ancient artifacts but I suspect in the hot dusty middle east and eastern mediterranean would have made such dress at least very dirty. Many of the troops would have come from poor backgrounds so I suspect for much of the army poor drab clothing might well have been the order of the day.
We do know that the Persian army was very cosmopolitan taking troops from many of its conquered lands.
Anyway hope you enjoy these
