As a kid I thought it funny how the Britains riders stuck to the horses. Pegs on legs seemed more dignified.

Marx made a dead horse - I think it has been recast..... TSSD converted some of theirs to be dead horse for their Custer sets.

BMC made some dead horses for it's Little Big Horn play set that were not included in sets sold at Toys R Us. The horse came with plastic arrows to stick in the horses.

Yes some one did do a recast of the Marx dead horse, I,m not sure who??? but some one did. I picked up a few at a toy soldier show. I reworked the saddles to napoleonic style saddles and I mixed body parts from one with an Italeri head. With a little work you can cut some horses from the base and rework them a bit into dead and wounded horses as I did in the photo. Its just a matter of finding the right horses to work with. Cutting them up is kinda tough though. You,ll need a mini saw and most likely some putty.

I have not put to much effort into trying any other then the couple of quick attempts here, but at some point in the future I might have a better go at them. Horse conversions are a lot more cutting and fitting work But I,m sure there are some good parts out there to cut up and piece together for some cool looking dead and wounded horses. I also messed around a bit on a few other horse conversions to get a few different horse poses and rearing horses.
Horse anatomy is tricky to get right so horse conversions can be tough.
Here are a couple of conversions I did. I sculpted a new saddle from putty on the Marx recast and in the other I used an Italeri head and front legs on the bottom half of a marx recast. The other is an Italeri reworked into a wounded horse.

You're probably right, I was thinking of the rubber bendy Gumby and Pokey toys.

All around best horses in plastic, I guess assorted Italeri .Some were great{ I like the galloping pose from the ACW Confederate Cavalry set best} a few of my least favorite were from the Scot's Greys.
Just kinda ODD. Marx did some nice ones for the western sets.
Jean Hofler had some really fanciful mounts for the Knights in the awesome King Arthur's Castle set. I liked them though!^&grin

It's not that I dislike horses or anything but I was wondering if anyone knows of any plastics manufacturers that produce unpainted dead or wounded horses in 54mm. I just want a cheap way of filling a battlefield realistically. Thanks, Paul

I believe that Marx made some - they still show up in swap meets and eBay. CTS and/or BMC also make some dead horses. Most of these are equipped for ACW era, but that can always be modified.

Just read this thread.

I know there are lots of 1/72 sets with dead horses because I've painted hundreds of them but I have never seen them in 54mm.
