Between Germans and Soviets Tanks which one was more effective from 1941-1943

(Barbarossa 22 June 1941 and Battle Kursk summer 1943)?

Regarding the armoured shield, speed and power capability:

Germans

Panzer III
PanzerIV
Tiger I
TigerII

Soviets

T-34
KV-1
T-35

Cheers:)

"Speed, power, mobility"? There is only ONE tank on your list of choices that is a clear winner in all those areas - the T34! Even though I like US armor more than others, I recognize that T34 set a new standard for tanks. You can look at tank design and recognize that all German tanks designed after 1942 were designed to meet and beat the T34 - a new standard of excellence had been set. Most US tanks since 1947 have also been designed to beat the T34 and its decendents.

Thanks for the replies. (Sorry but my English is not that good)

In my opinion the Germans Tanks had a better optic of controlling precision because the radio communication between tanks. Something that only a few commandants from the Read Army had (I’m talking about 1941) at this time the German war machine was more effective because of the war experience developed on the Poland and French campaign.

But the T-34 was the best Tank of the whole European theatre.

The T-34 was considered a middleweight Tank (26 tons) but heaviest than a Panzer IV (18 tons). The KV-1 with 47 tons was a worth surprise to the Germans. Only the Flak 88mm could stop than.

Cheers:)

Gosh darn it- you guys roped me in on this- :D

I think that is more a result of our doctrine- who were we most likely to face after WW2- The Soviets or one of their cronies- so wouldn't it naturally follow that we would develop our armor to defeat theirs?? I don't think it was really a position of "Well, the T series tanks are supreme" but more like "what are we most likely to face in a USSR, PRC, DPRK, etc, etc, showdown- one of the T series tanks- ok, let's build our Main Battle Tank to topple theirs..."

STANDS ALONE!!

Hi Guys,

Some interesting opinions here. Without a doubt the best tank mentioned was the Soviet T-34 as far as it goes but I am sure we all have our favorites. I for one and really a fan of the Panzer IV. I have a lot of reasons for this but mainly its due to its versitility and reliability. It was a work horse for the German Army and even though it was out classed gun to gun it was a fairly strong tank could take a beating. Of course the Tiger I is more sexy but still I am fan of the Panzer IV.

All the best

The King Tiger would have been post 1943. And don't forget the Panther. The German tanks were superior - particularly the Panthers and Tigers but they could not be produced in the same numbers. I'll take either of those in a one on one duel with the T34. Best tank in the war though is probably the Russian JS2.

Oh Chris

Yea of little faith. If the discussion had been best tank ever, well the answer would be for me M1 Abrams it was a ton of fun to run around on and boy could it shoot! However the question was posed with the vehicles mentioned so I have to give the T34 its due but I also had to give a nod to the much over looked Mark IV it just isnt as cool as some of the others.

Otherwise the Summer Trek is going well I am out in Eastern Mass doing some work for my sister while she entertains my kids. Hope to get to Minuteman Toy Soldiers tomorrow and maybe the Hobby bunker on Friday but we'll see.

All in all I will be happy to get back home and have full time high speed internet access...

All the best

Dave,

George is not around right now. This weekend he's at Historicon in Pennyslvania.

just like there are no athiests in foxholes, the best tank or apc is ANY tank or apc that you have covering your rear end in a firefight...

ONE WORD FOR THE BEST MODERN TANK:

LEOPARD II

:D :D :D

Nice toy, but unproven in combat or in environments outside Europe. For a MAN's TANK - try an
M1/M1A1/M1A2 ABRAMS!!!!
A combat proven winner! You can't fight that little fact. Leopard has nice stats, but no actual combat exposure.

Hey Brad,

I spoke to a friend today an he also mentioned that George was away. No sweat maybe next time right.

As for Ron and the Leo II not going to consider it until they decide to use it. Nice show piece but I will go with The Abrams followed closely by the Challenger
