As a horror fan, I watch a lot of really, really bad movies. And I was prepared to dislike this one based on the tired "found-footage" premise but it turns out to be decent. The premise involves some guys making a ersatz documentary on the Ojai Vampire who stumble on the legend of the Char Man. The initially annoying amateur quality to the film eventually gives it a bit of charm and believability. Reminds me a bit of Paranormal Activity. It's playing for free on Amazon's Prime channel which by some miracle appeared on my Comcast cable system. Many of the reviews hate it but that is typical.

I saw your thread about this movie yesterday so I decided to go home and watch the movie last night. I found myself shaking my head and laughing more than anything but it did have it's moments. The lore was the most interesting thing to me. And I too am a lover of horror movie and I have to agree with you that there are many, many disappointments in that genre. I think the last time IO felt really unnerved during a horror movie was The Conjuring (the first one) and Sinister also gave me a creepy feeling. However, it's funny that you mentioned Paranormal Activity. When that movie came out I was a Freshman in College and for about two weeks when I went to bed (I lived in the dorms) I'd put a shoe in front of my door to make sure it hadn't opened during the night. That movie legit creeped me out.

Yes, lots of buddy humor on in Char Man. It's as much a comedy as a horror flick but in a good way. Much more enjoyable than I expected. One thing I learned from this movies is if the kitchen sink ever comes on at night, it's time to boogie. I remember the tag line for Paranormal Activity was something like "don't watch it alone." The giant movie theater that I saw it in was completely empty. I was the only person there because my wife doesn't like horror films. Creepy.

Another one that I just remembered that had me kind of cringy was called "Digging up the Marrow" you should check that one out if you haven't already seen it.

Watched it today. Pretty good. I really like old Ray Wise. He is quite a character. Sometimes hard to watch him and not think of his Twin Peaks role though. My favorite horror flick on Prime is "Dead Snow 2." Lots of humor and gore. And a Tiger tank driven by Nazi zombies. What is not to like? "The Terrifier" on Netflix is an old school gore film. I liked that one but its not for the squeamish.

I saw The Terrifier and it was alright. I've never seen Twin Peaks. You should check out Quarantine. It's a different take on the "plaque" movies. It's about a malicious strain of rabies. Also, two creature featues I recommend are Monster (which I know is on Netflix) and Splinter. I'll have to check out Dead Snow tonight.

On the downside of the horror ledger, I just suffered through something called "Winchester." A god awful ghost-type film about the heir to the Winchester rifle fortune who builds a mansion to capture the ghosts of those killed with her family rifle. Based around the Winchester Mansion in San Jose. A truly awful movie.

I don't think there are enough words to describe how horrible that movie was. And the Winchester legend had/has so much potential for a Horror movie.

Yes, I thought the concept had potential but man it was awful. In contrast, a somewhat similar concept in Netflix's reboot of "The Haunting of Hill House" was great. I had low expectations but really enjoyed that one. They are apparently making a second season which will probably screw it up but it was about the best horror mini-series that I've seen in a long while.

I've heard nothing but praise for that show since it came out and I have been meaning to check it out. A buddy of mine (who is a straight horror hound) just got engaged and was going to have his wedding at that mansion but they stopped doing weddings there. Even though they only did outside shots of the mansion, there were no inside scenes filmed in it, it still would have been pretty cool.
