The following is a very thought provoking article about a relatively new book, When Montezuma Met Cortes: The True Story of the Meeting That Changed History. Among its many points, it discusses why Montezuma invited Cortes into Tenochtitlan and how the Spanish were able to take over Mexico and what is today Central America.

The article notes that hundred and eighty-seven million people died during the first century of the occupation of America.

Great. I plan to order it too. The writer mentions the Hugh Thomas. I may get that one too. Thomas was a great historian and his Spanish Civil War, which I have read a few times over the years, still holds up very well.

Here's another book that's considered a classic told from the Aztec side, Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico by Miguel Lopez-Portilla. I think I read it in grad school years ago but can't remember at this point.
