Ok, Ken & I went to see The Duchess the other night. I was prepared to be disappointed. It had all the ingredients needed to take a period piece and completely ruin it. It had big name stars (Keira Knightly and Ralph Fiennes), hollywood backing, a big release, period clothing and based on a true story. A classic recipe for a disastrous movie.
But I was pleasantly surprised, even shocked at how good a film it was. It is set in London & Bath circa 1790's. First off, those that know me know that I am a historic clothing nut. Bad period clothing and hair will ruin a movie for me. The period clothing in this movie is magnificent! If you like period clothing, this is your movie. It even shows the subtle variation and advancement of style as time progresses. The attention to detail that is found in this movie is astounding! The wig maker should be given an oscar. The details of the houses, meals, carriages- everything is bang on. Lovely.
But what is more astounding is that they did a great job of conveying the social etiquette, mores and basic life assumptions of the times. These are hard things to convey in 2 hours time. Hard things to convey in even a semesters time, yet this movie does it. And it does so without pity, modern assumptions and without making those that used the system in place, and to their advantage, complete villains.
I think I will need to see it again, and on the big screen. So, if it is playing in your neighborhood or even a bit of a drive, go and see it. It is worth the price of admission.
All the best,
Ericka

PS- just to let you know, it is not a complete "chick flick". My Dad, retired military officer, weapons collector and lover of all things John Wayne even enjoyed it!

Erika would you say it is better than Kirsten Dunst aka Mary Jane as Marie Antoinette?

Vick

The Deulist was a fantastic flick of course how can you go wrong with Cavalrymen insulting each other;)

I guess I need to take my lovely wife out for a date so we can see this one.

All the best

Dave

I will most likely go see it, I could not stand the Marie Antoinette movie as I felt that it shed to much good light on her behalf.

The Marie Antoinette movie just dove me nuts! What was with all the modern music??? And the story line was severely lacking. In general an awful movie. The Duchess really does an outstanding job all the way around. Even the meals that are served are correct period meals, on correct plates etc. It does a great job of conveying life for the aristocracy at the end of the eighteenth century. See it on the big screen before it disappears!
All the Best,
Ericka

Glad to see I'm not the only one who saw and enjoyed "The Duelist". Felt like the Lone Ranger in my neighborhood. -- lancer

Hi Guys,

I have not seen the above movie yet… it’s playing in HK as I write. However mention was made of “The Duellists”… This film is one of the finest historical movies ever made. It was Ridley Scott’s first movie and is a feast for the eyes!!! Everything about it is first class… the acting… the directing… the costumes… the uniforms… the settings… the lighting… and the script.

It was made in the late 1970’s and it cost about £1 million… unbelievable! Heck, they did the retreat from Moscow in the Scottish Highlands with just 60 extras!!!

Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine were never better. As you may have surmised I am an enthusiast for this little flick. Beg, borrow or steal it… you will not be disappointed.

Happy Movie Watching!
Andy C.

P.S. If you like "The Duchess" try and see Stanley Kubrich’s "BARRY LYNDON"… another all-time Neilson favourite.

Hi Andy,
Ken & I both love Barry Lyndon, great details, great music, great locations! The Duchess surpasses it in clothing detail hands down! If it is playing near you, go and see it! Drag Gordon along, I really think he would like it!
Another great 18th century set movie is Dangerous Liaisons with Glenn Close and John Malkovich (and Michelle Pheiffer, Uma Thurman, Swoosie Kurtz and weirdly enough, Keanu Reeves). All the details are bang on. It is also a great mind games movie, who can do what to whom and what is worse. It is worth renting.
All the Best,
Ericka

After reading all of your comments, I have to see this in the theaters, before it moves off to DVD.

I like the other period pieces you all mention as well, and the trailer also reminded me of "The Madness of King George", "Restoration", and "A Royal Scandal", which aired here on public television.

And yes-"The Duellists" is a great little movie, Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine were excellent, and great supporting work to (Edward Fox, eg).

Prost!
Brad

Hi, Ericka, no, unfortunately, not yet. I haven't found a theater in my area that has it, :(

I may have to go farther afield than the Lehigh Valley for it. I think I'll see "A Quantum of Solace" before I get to see "The Duchess".

Prosit!
Brad
