In April 1865, with much fanfare, newspapers across the Union trumpeted the news of Confederacy Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on April 9. The American Citizen (Butler, PA), among others, published the War Department's official gazette describing the correspondence between the two generals prior to the surrender.
