I was watching the first half-hour of Jay Leno (The Tonight Show) last night. The featured skit was "Battle of the JayWalk All-stars," wherein 3 of the particluarly obtuse people Jay has interviewed in past JayWalking segments (Jay's man-on-the-street interviews) "answer" lay-up questions.

Last night Jay flashes a picture of Napoleon and asks, "Who is this?"
Response was: "Elton John."

That's it! Western Civilization is OVER. The Barbarians have won!

Not sure if all is out of whack- Napoleon was French- I can guarantee that if I were quizzed on being able to identify 10 Civil War commanders- I'd fail miserably

...I would probably not do much better on the ACW, ...but "Elton John"??????

Oh I agree. I am not sure what vintage picture of Napoleon he used but he was always better looking than Elton John.;):D The pity is that Napoleon is just not considered as all that significant by those who educate here.

I thing I would do pretty good on the ACW pictures and fair for the American side of the AWI but not so good on current world leaders, none of whom seem to stand out for any reason.;) I have not seen a Churchill or Roosevelt lately.

come on...they could be brothers...:D

that's your public school dollars at work...

The world is over. I might as well become a monk:eek: Lets face it:...oops, I forgot... I am unable to face the fact that people no longer care...:( can' say it

"...picture of Napoleon ..."

If it was the one of Napoleon in his coronation robes that is posted above then I wouldn't expect people on the street to recognize it as Napoleon. Napoleon in uniform is a such a common icon in cartoons, movies, commercials, jokes, and movies that most folks would recognize that image.

You have to take into account that the show is only going to broadcast the funny takes. The idea that public schools are to blame, in this case, for a set up edited TV bit is a slander that gets repeated too often. What are the alternatives, "home school" or private schools for the wealthy or religious private schools. I would suspect elitism, exceptionalism, and indoctrination unsuitable to a modern secular democracy.

My daughter is home from High School because of surgery and I'm helping her with make up American history work. I'm happy that it as inclusive of basics as it is, considering that there is literally 40-50 MORE years of US history to learn since I was in school. (The book is several pounds w/o exaggeration.)

Well I think the post and responses should be taken in the vein (fun) that they were offered. It is a wee bit too early to be worrying about slander, even if it were to apply.:)

"...a Slander..." I'm "Heading it off at the pass" so to speak.

"Public school education" is Kind of like "the kids these days", "going to Hell in a hand basket, hand cart," "Wake UP!" "slippery slope" and other classics.;)

No swipe at public education - or anything else for that matter - intended here. Just having a little fun.

While I agree that Jay and others do set some people up, it still amazes me that they are able to find SO MANY utter idiots - apparently so easily.

It's mind-blowing to imagine that anyone with a high school education in the USA would not know who Napoleon was. And to confuse him with Elton John ....?
