A full company of regulars from the 42nd, plus a detachment of grenadiers. As it regards fifers, two fifers were attached to each of the grenadier companies, none to the other regular line companies. The fifers may not have been formally added to the regimental rolls until after 1758, but some regiments apparently utilized fifers prior to 1750.
The painter, David Morier, is a prime source for uniforms during the FIW period. The Duke of Cumberland commissioned dozens of paintings, but most of the paintings pre-date the war by about 5 years. Here we have an 1751 painting with a fifer. Apparently, the Duke of Cumberland reintroduced fifers around 1745.
Well guess what I was doing tonight ... ya' looking at those great columns of marching JJD British .... really, really impressive with the arrangement and sets. There are many in that case that I can only see when you folks post the superb shots.
