I'd like to recommend a book which I read years ago and still have. It's called The First Casualty and it's about the role of the war correspondent in war from Crimea to Vietnam. The author is Phillip Knightley and it takes its name from Senator Hiram Johnson's dictum in 1917: "The first casualty when war comes is truth."
The book has been recently updated through Iraq in a paperback edition. Highly recommended in my view.
