This is a quick snap that Bob (Fitzgibbon) took of a bridge diorama he is working on. My 11 year old nephew Oliver then showed what he thought of bases!

Great photo. The pontoon bridge looks great as does the river.

Hi Steve,
an old fascination with the bridges of Lobau Island recently brought to fruition by a collaborative project involving lots of young people and some new technology. The making of the boats by new processes, one-off backdrop production, digital enhancement, new water products, and, just yesterday, a very young sculptor to do the pontoniers. Great fun and really exciting to see so many young folk engage.

Bob's diorama is praiseworthy as always.:D However, I want to focus on Oliver's work for a moment. What I find remarkable is the extent to which he's able to shroud the bases with his graphics tools, while also successfully neutralizing the reality of height which the stands normally impart to the figures by their very nature. It's almost as though Martin's art specialist was able to lower the figures 2-3mm. Fascinating and nicely done.:cool:

My nephew is a touch smarter than me. I am told that he is 13 rather than 11! I had the last laugh though because I offered to pay him but his mother said he would be happy with half what I offered ... and who am I to argue!

And being able to halve the offer requires some skill...and a magnifying glass :).
Matt (Norman508) was over on Sunday when we were visited by yet another youngster, who just happens to be building a diorama from Timpo; amazing the creative interest, and Matt's son is also heavily into competitive diorama building. I believe the evidence points to active "doings" rather than passive collecting for engagement of younger people in the hobby. I gave young Josh a grass mat to save Dad's pool table. But Dad was enjoying it too; something to do together is always good.
I agree with you Moe; the exercise on removing the bases went the extra mile when the feet actually touched the planks. There are going to be some new standards set in the future by people not yet in their teens.

Hi Bob,

A young protege of yours from Australia did some demonstration work with several of the pics that I've posted here at TF. I found this one to be particularly compelling:

Edited by a gentleman named David, I was really impressed with both the effort and the effect. As TS-collectors, we get so used to stands that we lose sight of what they look like to the uninitiated!:eek:

Hi Moe,
David did the backdrop on the pontoon bridge promo diorama. His area was limited to photography until we met him, along with the talented Jane, at the model rail show - but humans are all creative at the core. The work he did on your already neat composition not only removed the bases but included the shadow of the person on the ground. Glad you liked it. This extension of detailing lifts the shot to the "more believably real" level. And, big picture, this interaction with other parties and their creative skills represents the direction that younger players will take "the hobby". I hear the same tale of the dying hobby over in model railways where, as you know, the Brisbane group has already made some contacts. Our static display in large scale made quite a splash and drew invitations to a number of events. We are exploring the potential to have fun with WWI light rail, and it has a lot of legs (watch this space). While the model rail enthusiasts lament the dearth of young people in their hobby, they freely admit to excluding them from club membership - and fail to hear the obvious solution in their own words. At our end of "the hobby", passive collecting is passe. The younger generation is creative and active, as well as less economically able. But partnerships where sharing is the methodology can produce amazing results - and they are into having fun so the journey is worthwhile. I know I'm preaching to the converted but a collection of boxes in the garage does little for anyone's concept of having fun - for pushing the boundaries, you can't beat the younger generation, and that's where innovation commences. Our only problem is in the narrow definition we have put on "the hobby", and it is a problem easily solved. We just need to stop talking negatively to each other and go talk positively to people with other skills. If we really want a hobby with a younger generation participating, then we just have to go out and make it happen.
Enjoy life, Bob {sm4}
