Private Richard Boyle of the Compagnie d'Irlandais has just presented a trophy of war (the mitre cap of a British grenadier) to Saundustee (water) a Huron ally of Montcalm's forces in North America during the French & Indian War. Boyle's family had settled in New France during the 17th Century to escape British persecution of their Catholic religion. Montcalm's army included Irish companies made up of British deserters and Irish settlers of Quebec like Boyle. These Irish units which fought in both Europe and North America in the 18th Century were distinguished by their red and green uniforms. A sizable population of Irish ancestry may still be found in Quebec and in 2009 the McCord Museum of Canadian History in Montreal will hold an exhibition entitled: Being Irish O'Quebec.
