As he said it the Lt knew that Captain Grant was just waiting for him to make one mistake,one mistake that could lead him back to that day on Crete and the terrible secret it holds.

Crete – it seemed so long ago, but in Lt. John Hartley’s mind those terrible events would never be forgotten.
He closed his eyes and thought of Maria but whenever he tried to focus on her face all he could remember was the terrible sound of mocking laughter and the hateful visage of Sturmbanfuhrer Joachim Schneider.
One day Hartley and Schneider would meet again and there would be a reckoning.

He closed his eyes and thought of Maria but whenever he tried to focus on her face all he could remember was the terrible sound of mocking laughter and the hateful visage of Sturmbanfuhrer Joachim Schneider.
One day Hartley and Schneider would meet again and there would be a reckoning.

And with the reckoning would would come the awful,cold truth.They were brothers!!!

Hee hee,i can just picture the last page of 'My Brother,my Enemy'.

Hartley and Schneider,quoffed another glass of beer and slapped each other on the back as only brothers can,they had come through a long journey and had come to an understanding.They both would dump Maria as she smelled bad and go into town and buy themselves a couple of women!

Strangely enough i don't remember that happening in War Picture Library.

Anyway in my version - Maria was dead she'd been killed by the SS while helping the Commandos with their mission!
It was all very emotional and you wouldn't have been able to read it without a tear in your eye!

Quite right,mine was offensive and i've removed it.

But Schneider knew nothing of this,and when he did the SS would pay a high price.

Ok Schneider was a raving Nazi - but only cause he'd been raised by his lunatic father with a comedy moustache in the heart of the Black Forest.
Lt Hartley on the other hand had been bought up by his mother in rural Warwickshire.
Both had fallen in love with the same woman on Crete but of course she'd only had time for the brave and daring British Commando officer!

Schneider's father was also a Tyrannical land owner who terroized his tennants and had never got over the German defeat in 1918.He would fall to his death from the roof of his mansion house,leaving Schneider to inherit everything and be loved by the tennants as a kind and just man!

I have a feeling he may be a German spy who has been undermining Lt Hartley since they joined up together just before the war.
It was Captain Grant who betrayed Maria to the SS!

James,that would make for the biggest turn around in the History of War comics,the German the Good guy and the Brit the Villain!

Yes it all comes back to Grant,Grant whose jealousy of Hartley burned inside him until he saw Maria as an outlet for revenge!

Yes Grant is the true enemy. it would all come to a head on a daring Commando mission to Berlin in April 1945. Grant and Hartley would be given the task of assassinating the top Nazi atomic scientist Dr Von Klampt who is very close to producing a viable nuclear device for Germany.
The good news is Von Klampt wants to defect to the Allies but only if Hartley and Grant agree to take along his beautiful but headstrong daughter Alexandra.


You know what - i'd read this if somebody wrote it! sounds dead good!

Yep it's going really well now.
Grant and Hartley are going to be fighting their way out of war torn Berlin- trying to avoid the Germans and keeping one step ahead of a crack Russian team who have been sent to capture Von Klampt.

Romance will be kept to a minimum!

As Hartley lay in the shallow dugout he had scratched his mind went back to the sun drenched Island of Crete.The rows of Olive trees that covered the land,and there deep amongst them like a hidden shame the awful scene that despite the heat chilled him to the bone.The Cretian woman surely in her sixties with the fixed emotionless face bringing the rock down upon the young Fallschirmjager's head as her two sons argued over who would deliver the coup de grace with the Paratroopers own Luger.

It was then that he spotted Schneider for the first time,in the distance running,running in the way that only the desperate can run,as if his life depended on it,which of course it did.
