Looking for a new Missus Heid.....
Naaa.....I'm actually offshore at the moment, supposed to be working. Its 99.9% likely that I'll be transferring permanantly to our Thailand operations in future on a 4-week on/4-week off deal. Refer to the nonsense in my "Building The Winter Diorama" thread in the HOW TO Diorama section for an update on the fun I'm having.

Cheers

Thanks for the pictures Harry. You sure been getting around lately. I enjoy seeing the oil platforms. I watch the History channel when they do the North Sea drilling or moving new platforms to the North Sea. Are you involved with the drilling or the equipment? Thanks Leadmen

Leadman,
I've never been personally involved with the drilling side - although I do work along with the drilling guys when installing production equipment into wells.
I'm typically more involved in surface control equipment and instrumentation. Anything from +5Vdc up to 5000Vac control gear. Plus SCADA and RCU systems. All of this is to control production equipment that might be up to two miles under the earth's surface. I'm also a certified trainer and particularly enjoy getting 3rd world nationals up to a general level of competency (and teaching them how to say "bad-words") :D:D;);).
Interesting stuff.
As for the North Sea, the last time I was out there was in 2003. In fact, the only way I ever want to see the North Sea again is from Aberdeen Beach Boulevard....!!!!
Cheers

Nice pics Harry - specially the sharks. Looks exciting.

Regarding your 4th picture, you do realize smoking on an oil platform can be dangerous for one's health?:D

Harry, those are great shots, thats a tough life being on and off like that. Great to see your a hard working regular guy, good luck, stay safe, and don't feed the sharks, they will never leave. Mike:)

Harry do you guys do any fishing off those platforms? I hear they attract all kinds of fish and offer up some incredible fishing. If I was stuck on that thing I,d spend all my free time fishing.

Unfortunately, fishing is strictly forbidden. Potential danger to diving operations.
I do have other diversions though. The Oil Company Rep and me are the only Caucasians on the platform. Everyone else is Thai, Indonesian, Filipino or Indian, so naturally we tend to hang out together. Trouble is, he's from Miami and I'm - not...!!! So, during our conversations, around 75% of what's said is lost due to the very different accents. :D:D It does mean I can say the most outrageous things and not get caught though. Maybe he's doing the same thing...!!!
Here's a couple more shots of those crazy sharks. They seem to like jam sandwiches.....at least that's what I used to lure them in for the photos. Difficult to say how big they are cos I'm taking these shots with a mobile phone camera from about 40ft up on the platform. I would reckon the biggest one is around 4ft though. Was chatting to the Barge Captain at lunchtime. He reckons there's around 20 of them out there. Trust me, there's more like 50 of them. Wonder if they know something we don't.
Oh well, hopefully I'll get off this tub in time to welcome 2008 in Pattaya or Bangkok.

PS. I've asked Santa for a Canon EOS 30D SLR Camera and an HB Winter Tiger.
Cheers

Ron,
Naaaa.....swimming around the rig's not looked on as being a "Good Idea".
Got back to Pattaya this morning. Have been told that I'm not expected to surface in our office before 2nd January. Yippee.....:D
Meanwhile, here's some snaps of some terrified Thais transferring from the platform to the supply boat by personnel basket last night. They had to prise one of those guys fingers off the netting. Was like something out of "Trains, Planes & Automobiles"..... Easy for me to snigger of course, cos I'd already done the transfer and had my shaky hands under control. That's over a hundred feet up and the faster the crane operator drops the basket, the higher I scream.....!!!!
Finally, here's a couple of The Heid desperately pretending he knows what he's doing - and fooling no-one. Sorry for the photo quality. Taken with a mobile phone camera in bad light.
Sheesh, 5 nights in Pattaya before I have to report to our office? Shall be interesting finding out just how much serious trouble I can get myself into....:D:D
Won't get to Hong Kong until end of January now - but it does mean that I'll be able to buy a set of K&C miniature figurines that I've had my eye on for some considerable time now. Oh aye, and I'll catch the Chinese New Year celebrations up in Dalian during my time off - which is always a lot of fun.
Cheers

a hard working regular guy

Dunno about that Mike. During around 13 days offshore I actually carried out about 2 hours of real work - rest of the time all I was doing was pressing buttons on control panels.....and now I've got 5 nights of chill-out in Pattaya to look forward to, plus a visa run to Singapore for a couple of days (although I'm going to try and change that to Hong Kong).
Aye, there's justice in this world right enough.....:D:D:D
Cheers

Pop quiz hot shot! You've got an electrical fault on your rig and a blue wire and a red wire. Which do you cut? ;)

That funny coil thingy happens to be a cooling fan.
Oh okay then, its a flux capacitor with an energy value of 5,000 Megajoules....perhaps....:D:D;)

Well Simon, personally I wouldn't cut either of them. I would however, hand a pair of sidecutters to the Rig Electrician and let him decide.....While I run like fun towards the lifeboats........:D:D;)

Thanks W.
I'm having a lot of fun here. Of course its what you make of it yourself. you can sit offshore and be miserable counting off the days until you're scheduled to go home, or you can have a great time meeting and interfacing with all the different nationalities, cultures, etc. I know which I prefer. :):):)

Cheers and a Very Happy New year in 2008.

Harry that sounds like an interesting job. Do you have to keep the Energizer Bunny fed in case of an emergency?:D Nice pictures. Leadmen

Well, I've been doing this job for around 25 years now L, so I guess there's something in it that keeps me interested. Mind you, if I've been doing it for 25 years, then I must have been 10 when I began.....LOL.
The Energiser Bunny is trickle charged off an inverter. For the non-techies, this means that electrical power never fails. (And isn't that a big shining lie).

Happy New Year Leadman.
Cheers
