HBO has a new 6 part series that I just watched Chapter 1 of tonight…

it’s the story about a member of one New York’s wealthiest real estate fortune families and his murder trial and life musings…

a “true story”…done documentary style…with Robert Durst in recorded interviews and film…it is a very strange story…

I’m sure New Yorkers are familiar with the Durst family name…

one reason I find it interesting…was that he was acquitted of a murder in Galveston…where I live…

he went to trial for dismembering someone with a saw and dumping their body parts in Galveston Bay…I remember when this happened as it was a huge deal down here and I had some law enforcement friends that were personally involved with the case…

it looks pretty good…it chronicles his attempts to disguise himself as a deaf mute woman while a fugitive and his extremely bizarre behavior while on the run…you might give it a watch…

if you have enough money...you can get away with anything...

I watched this last night.

Not sure what to make of this, a six part show.

Loved it when they told him his bail was 250 grand and did he have 250 grand; his reply was "Well not on me."

Wow.

He got nailed after jumping bail at a Wegmans for stealing a sandwich when he had 37 grand in his car.

Master criminal he's not.

Or is he?

I think when he severed ties with his real estate rich family...they gave him $60,000,000.00...so he had money...

that was on top of his $2,000,000.00 annual trust allowance...

it is a bizarre story...they never found the head of the guy he dismembered in Galveston...

I was in an elevator heading to vote and also in the elevator was Durst's defense attorney, Dick DeGuerin and other legal people. DeGuerin had a cast on his leg and joked that he injured his leg kicking the judge whom he sparred with---which everyone thought was hilarious
He didn't know that I was a journalist who did something on the incident which I found out the judge got a kick out of my work (no pun intended).

Gents,

Saw a couple of episodes and was hooked. Who is the pinche carbon? I guess I will have to keep watching. Reminded me of the Foxcatcher Movie.

John from Texas

John...I watched Chapter 2 the other night...this man is the Devil...he looks into the camera and lies so convincingly...

when his first wife's friends searched his trash and found all her make up and clothes in them after only one month of her vanishing...then he knew she was never coming home again...he knew because he killed her...

if your wife mysteriously disappeared and was gone only a month...

would you throw everything she owned away?

hahaha...

he knew she wasn't coming back cause he killed her...

that coupled with his hand written list that they found in his trash for a rental car...a boat and a shovel...

come on man...

just goes to show you...money can buy your way out of anything...

I just finished a book..."Murder Most Texan"...by Bartee Haile...

it's a hodgepodge of 10 or 15 true stories of bizarre Texas murders where the defendants were acquitted because of the powerful status in the state or the access to money...bribed juries...powerful allies...money...etc...

Durst got away with 2 murders...at least...

he's the Devil himself...

Almost as strange as Durst himself is how HBO is marketing this as some type of series. Almost like it's a fictional Fargo type show rather than recounting real life events in which people were murdered. Durst comes across as a kind of elitist oddball - or because he is rich eccentric. He seems fairly articulate. It's fascinating, but giving him a platform to get his side of the story is questionable.

Mike,

I am going to have to get that book. Right now I am trying to get through some books that I have pledged to read this year, but that one sounds interesting. The one murder/massacre that always fascinates me is the Mexican family who was killed over by Ozona, TX on Hwy 163 back in the 70's. We got a lot of contractors who travel out there and I jokingly tell them to be careful "cause they kill Mexicans over there". Yikes!

John your neighbor

"Not guilty."

Yikes.

I'm speechless, not sure what else to say here.

Other than I know where I'm going if I want to bump someone off and get away with it;

"Galviston oh Galviston, I still hear your seawitch crashing, while I watch the cannons slashing, I clean my gun and dream of Galviston."

Yep, I'm heading to Texas, that's for sure.

Durst was just arrested. I guess there is something to keeping your mouth shut like the lawyers always advise.

Quite an interesting final episode. Given Durst's age and frail health, I wouldn't be surprised if he is willing to cut a deal and accept blame for the outstanding murders in return for a reduced sentence. I'm sure the DA doesn't want to go through a lengthy trial with a mixed bag of evidence against him with all his legal resources. The guy certainly doesn't have all his marbles, but I doubt he tries an insanity defense since that opens the door for his brother to obtain control of his money. In some strange way, I found him somewhat sympathetic or at least more so than his brother. He may even have wanted to be caught.
