I don't know about as much as India as I probably should and this brief book (200 pages) by Dennis Judd (Professor of History at London Metropolitan University in 2003, when this book was written) is an excellent introduction. Published by Oxford University.
His book has a lot of quotations and anecdotes that capture the feeling of the times from both the British and Indian sides. He doesn't dwell minutely on all the little wars so you don't get lost in their munitae.
