William Simpson, a musketeer in the British Foot Guards, is on sentry duty at the entrance of a farmhouse in the Flemish (Belgian) countryside during the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714). Simpson is part of the large army sent to Flanders by Queen Anne to battle the forces of Louis XIV of France. The leader of the British forces was John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough and ancestor of Winston Churchill. 1706 witnessed the victory of the British in Flanders at the Battle of Ramillies.
